Recycled License Plate Sign

A couple of weeks ago I shared a fun tutorial on how to use old license plates to make a fun accent wall in your home. Since I had some supplies left over, I decided to make a few more craft projects using old license plates. Last weekend I put together this super cute sign for my daughter, Chloe. This recycled license plate sign can be made in less than an hour and you can customize it to say anything you want.

Supplies

  • License plates with the letters that you need to spell out your word or phrase
  • Scrap piece of wood
  • Drill with metal drill bit
  • Screws
  • Tin snips
  • Ruler
  • Permanent marker

Start by cutting out the letters that you need from the license plates. Flip the plate over and use a ruler to mark your cuts with the permanent marker.

Use your snips to cut the letter out. The snips work just like scissors and easily cut through metal. You can buy metal snips at most hardware stores.

Arrange your letters on your piece of wood. You may have to drill holes in some of the license plate pieces if there are no existing holes. Use a drill with a bit made for drilling through metal. Make sure you wear your safety goggles. Nothing will ruin your day faster then shards of metal flying in your eye.

Use a drill or screwdriver to screw the letters in place. You may have to pre-drill some holes into the wood before you screw the letters into place.

My friend Rose had a great idea to use license plates with the tabs of Chloe's birth year. I wish I had thought of that earlier and plan to hunt though the scrap metal pile to see if I can find one.

What word or phrase would you put on your sign?

I've got a few more license plate crafts coming up in the next few weeks so stay tuned but if you missed the license plate accent wall tutorial make sure you go check it out!

Try thrift stores, flea markets or anywhere that sells weird old random junk!

I just did a quick search on Ebay and there are a ton. Some are quite pricey, but there are lots available!
