Diamond Tile Coaster Tutorial with Ceramic Tiles and Permanent Markers

Coaster Tutorial with Ceramic Tile and Permanent Markers

Hey Gnomies,

Last month I finished up my tile over laminate counter project and I still have a half box of square tile left over.

I hate to waste so I have been working on some projects that use up my leftover tile. I created some gold coasters with spray paint a few weeks ago. For today’s project I am making diamond graphic coasters with white ceramic tile and black permanent markers.

Supplies

  • 4 inch ceramic tile
  • Tile saw or manual tile cutter
  • Permanent marker
  • Washable marker
  • Ruler

Directions:

Begin by cutting one corner of the tile off. This will make the square tile into a diamond shape. You can use a tile saw (follow these directions)   or a manual tile cutter.

Clean and dry the tile (see also 'How To Clean Silverware With Coca Cola').

Outline the perimeter using a ruler and black permanent marker, then draw a line straight across connecting the two corners.

Use a washable marker to mark the center of the top of the diamond and also to mark the center line into thirds.

Use a ruler to connect the marks with the permanent marker so the design looks like the diamonds below:

Once the permanent marker is dried, use a wet cloth to wipe off any of the washable marker that can still be seen.

Bake the tiles at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Put the tiles in the oven before it heats up and leave them in until the oven has cooled to prevent cracking.

Once they are completely cooled the design is permanent and you can place your favorite drink on them.

If you mess up when you are drawing the lines you can use rubbing alcohol to remove the marker.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond!

What else should I make with my leftover tiles? Let me know any ideas you have in the comments!
