DIY Galaxy Sensory Bags

March 24, 2019

A sensory bag is a airtight plastic bag filled with gel, and other objects that little kids can play with without making a mess. Sensory play is so important for little ones. Sensory bags allow children to explore, discover, imagine, create, and learn while engaging many of their senses.  Try making these fun squishy galaxy bags with your kiddos. All you need is a Ziplock bag, hair gel, glitter and black paper.

DIY Sensory Bags

Do you have a kid who can’t help but to touch soft and squishy things? My daughter cannot resist touching anything soft and furry. It’s almost like a weird obsession. If we are out and about shopping and we drive the cart past a fur blanket or pillow, she just has to reach her hand out and touch it.

She also love making slime, playing with squishies and pretty much any other kind of goop she can stick her hands in and stir around.

At her girl scout meeting the other day we made fun galaxy sensory bags. We filled sandwich bags with hair gel and added glitter and sequins to make a fun, mess free sensory bag.

Chloe loved them so much we went home and made more. These sensory bags are easy to make and kids will love to play with them.

Why is sensory play important?

Sensory play impacts many areas of development including:

  • Language skills – a child will expand and develop their vocabulary and grammar as they describe the senses they are experiencing.
  • Sensory input – providing sensory input to meet a child’s needs.
  • Fine motor skills – through manipulating small objects, a child’s fine motor skills are improved.
  • Social skills – by communicating what they are experiencing and sharing sensory play with others, a child will naturally improve their social skills.

Sensory bags can be made in just about any theme. Add numbers, letters or shapes to help kids learn their basics. You can also use food coloring and help them explore the color wheel. Check out the instruction card below to learn how to make your own galaxy sensory bags.
