When you’re young, getting a letter in the mail is a fun treat. Once you become an adult all that usually waiting for you in your mailbox are bills.

Kids love send and receiving letters in the mail so this is a fun project to involve the kids in. You can have them send letters to family or friends and make their own DIY envelopes to mail them in.

These homemade paper envelopes can be used for anything from party invitations to thank you notes or valentines. The great thing is you can make them in any theme you want.

You can use magazine pictures, pics from old books, scrapbook paper, whatever you like. The envelopes work best with thicker paper so they will won’t be so flimsy

I chose to make mine with pictures from a Wonder Woman book I have. It’s called Wonder Woman the Complete History. I’ve had the book for about 15 years and although I don’t need to read it again I kept it around because there are a lot of really cool high quality photos on nice thick paper that can be re purposed into something new. Like envelopes! To those of you who think taking apart old books and up cycling them is sacrilegious… sorry!

                Materials for DIY Envelopes:

                • Paper of your choice. I used pages from this book.
                • Envelope in the same size that you would like to make.
                • Glue stick.
                • Scissors.
                • Ruler.

                DIY Envelope Template

                1. First find an envelope in the size you want.
                2. Then, carefully unfold it and tear it apart.
                3. Now you have the pattern for your envelopes.

                Handmade Envelope Directions

                1. Get a paper that’s about twice as large as your desired envelope size.
                2. Trace the template onto the homemade envelope paper.
                3. Cut out the traced shape.
                4. Fold the bottom flap of paper up.
                5. Fold the left and right sides inward.
                6. Tape or glue together the open left and right sides.
                7. Fold down the top to make a flap.
                8. Insert the letter or card.
                9. Glue or tape the flap to keep your message enclosed.

Can you make a homemade envelope out of a calendar?

Yes! Last years calendar is a great material for diy envelopes.

                Can you mail homemade envelopes?

Make sure you put sufficient postage on envelope. If you aren’t sure how many stamps it needs just ask the person working at the post office. The US post office (and, as far as I know, many post offices across the world) process letters using machines. Make sure both the contents and the outside of your envelope are flat and even so it won’t be ruined going through the machine.

You can make any size you like with any picture you like!
