Essential Oil Perfume Tutorial
Tired of fake, overpowering perfumes that are can cause allergic reactions and are bad for the environment? Try making your own out of essential oils! You probably already have some essential oils in your pantry. These oils are great to use for a personal fragrance with aromatherapy benefits.
Aromatherapy involves using concentrated essential oils that have been extracted from herbs, flowers, and other plants to treat various health issues.
Can we use essential oils as perfume?
Yes! Essential oils make great perfume. They need to be mixed with a carrier oil and should never be applied directly to the skin.
Essential oils make great personal fragrances because they are all natural and can be mixed together to create a custom fragrance.
As these oils are inhaled and absorbed into your body, you may experience other added aromatherapy benefits, too. Oils are more concentrated with less fillers, stick to your skin longer and don't contain dehydrating chemicals.

What are carrier oils?
Essential oils are distilled from the aromatic leaves, bark, and roots of plants. If applied to the skin directly, they can cause reactions, such as severe irritation, redness or burning.
Carrier oils are oils that are mixed with the essential oils to dilute them so that they can be applied to the skin without causing a reaction or irritation.
Aloe vera gels and unscented body lotion are also sometimes used as carriers.
What is the best carrier oil to use with essential oils?
- Almond oil
- Jojoba oil
- Sunflower oil
- Coconut oil
These glass perfume bottles are great because you can reuse them. If you want to make sure your oils last longer you can use a dark blue or brown glass bottle. This will help limit sun exposure and help keep the oils fresh longer.

How to mix essential oils with carrier oil to make perfume
To make perfume fill the bottle ¾ of the way with your carrier oil. I used plain almond oil from the grocery store. Then add 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil. You can blend different scents together or just use one.
Keep you oil in a dark cool place when you aren't using it. Make sure that it does not sit in direct sunlight (even if you did use a dark colored bottle)
