Easy Crackle Finish Frame

crackle finish frame

Hey Gnomies,

I showed you how to make a wood burned picture frame a while back and I love the way that it turned out. Today I am going to show you how to decorate a frame with an easy crackle finish. This technique is surprisingly simple. You don’t need any fancy supplies- just paint and plain white Elmers glue.

Supplies:

  • Basic wood frame
  • Wood stain
  • White school glue like Elmers
  • Craft paint

I started by applying dark wood stain to my frame. This step is optional depending on what type of look you are going for. Instead of stain you could use a different color paint in a contrasting color. This base color is what will show through the “cracks” in the top layer of paint.

After the stain dries apply your white glue with a paint brush. You don’t need to paint it on super thick, just quickly brush on a single coat of glue. Let the glue start to dry and once it starts to get tacky brush on your top coat of paint in a contrasting color.

As the paint dries it will begin to crackle. The result is a vintage style, rustic frame with tons of character. Once it is completely dry, seal the frame with a water based varnish and insert your photo!
