How to Stay Positive During the Gloomy Winter Months
I live in the Pacific Northwest which is infamous for it's gloomy, rainy weather all year round. After daylight savings time in the fall it gets darker earlier making it almost impossible to get outside and enjoy any sunshine until spring.
Last year we had a horrible winter. There was way more snow and ice that usual and I was literally trapped inside my house for days at a time because it was too dangerous to venture outdoors.
By the end of the winter I was definitely not feeling my best. All I wanted to do was lay in bed and sleep all day and I had no motivation to do any of the activities that I usually enjoy
I’d like to avoid feeling so terrible this year and make an effort to be proactive help myself stay more positive and motivated this winter. Here are some of the steps I'm taking.

I stocked up on Vitamin D
Vitamin D is synthesized by the skin when we’re exposed to sunlight during certain times of the day and year, and can also be found in a limited number of natural and fortified foods sources. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, and vitamin D supports bone, teeth, muscle and immune system health.†
I stocked up on Nature Made Vitamin D on a recent trip to Walmart.
Vitamin D3 – found in Nature Made vitamin D supplements – is the body’s preferred form of vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is more effective than vitamin D2 at raising and maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D in the body.†
- Vitamin D helps improve calcium absorption†
- Vitamin D supports bone, teeth, muscle, and immune health†
Did you know, 90% of US population do not meet their daily vitamin D needs? 1
Nature Made® offers several levels of Vitamin D at Walmart, including Nature Made® Vitamin D3 2000IU Tablet and Nature Made® Vitamin D3 5000IU Softgel. The 5000IU high dose product is intended for those deficient in Vitamin D as determined and recommended by their physician.
I purchased a happy light
I spend a lot of time indoors at my computer working. I purchased a happy light to keep on my desk while I work. A happy lights is a small portable light that mimics the daylight outside. Light therapy can help improve your mood and combat sleep issues by resetting your circadian rhythm.
I renewed my gym membership
When it’s pouring rain outside and freezing cold all winter it’s super tough to get motivated to exercise. I renewed my gym membership and have made exercising part of my daily routine. After I wake up and get my morning chores done, I head to the gym and get a 45 minute workout in.
I researched some new healthy meals to make
When I eat healthy nutritious food I feel better. I have done some searching for a few new meals that my whole family will like that I can easily make during the week. I’m making it a priority to cook healthy meals that are full of vitamins and minerals that can help my family feel our best.
If it’s sunny outside, that's where you'll find me
If there is a day that the weather isn’t miserable and we have even a few minutes of gorgeous sunshine, I am pledging to get out of the house and take my dogs out for a short walk so I can enjoy the nice weather even for a little bit.
I’m heading on vacation
If you have the opportunity to take some time off work, try to do it when the weather is nasty and you can get away to somewhere nicer.
My parents are headed to Hawaii this winter and I have already booked a flight to join them for a week. I took advantage of a flight sale and am using my points to fly. The accommodations are already paid for so there is no reason not to go! I booked our trip for the end of winter when I know I will be feeling stir crazy. It’s great to have something to look forward to.
Even if you can’t get away to somewhere warm and sunny, you can still try to take a weekend road trip somewhere nicer if you have the funds and can get the time off
How do you deal with feeling down over the winter months? What are some of your tips to help prevent it?

I also taKe vitamin D during between October and April and i found that it makes a big difference in my mood and energy levels. I also have some advice i received from a doctor and expert on vitamin d. You want to take vitamin D with a large meal. Breakfast is best and make sure to include healthy fat with the meAl so that the vitamin d is absorbed efficiently. Another tip is to purchase a vitamin D with an oil carrier, such as with oLive oil or coconut oil. That will help with absorption as well. FiNally, you want to take 1,000 I.U. Per 25 pounds of body weight. Taking between 5,000 I.U. And 10,000 I.U. daily is great To maintain levels and to increase levels if you have a deficiency.
