The One with the Friends Peep Hole Frame

The One with the Friends Peephole Frame

My husband and I have been watching the TV show Friends, on Netflix. Friends was my all-time favorite TV show back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Thursday nights were always reserved for watching Friends. Weirdly enough my husband was never a Friends watcher. He grew up without cable and they only had two free TV stations to watch and neither of them played Friends and because he was a teenage boy, he probably wouldn’t have watched it even if it was available.

We started at the beginning of the series a couple of months ago and now we are on season 7. We usually watch one episode per night before bed.

On the show, Monica’s apartment was where the gang hung out most on most of the episodes and the purple door with the yellow peephole frame became an interior design icon. Everyone who sees a picture of that famous door knows exactly where it's from.

Because I’m weird and I can’t help but paint weird murals and things all over my walls I decided to create the Friends peephole frame and Monica’s apartment door on the door of my craft room (check out the rest of the craft room tour here). Let me show you what I did:

The Purple Paint

I tried to look up the exact shade of purple that was used in Monica’s apartment but I couldn’t find it. I ended up using Devine Starlight from Devine Color at Target. The one small 8oz sample jar I bought was sufficient for two coats of paint on the door and it only cost about $5. In some of the pictures the purple looks grey but it is definitely purple in person.

The Peephole Frame

I originally planned to make my own peephole frame. It seemed easy enough. I tried using polymer clay on an old picture frame but that failed big time. I was going to make one out of paper mache but then I found this one on EBay and just decided to buy it. I attached it to the door using command strips.

The actual peephole inside of the frame isn’t a peephole at all. It’s a photo of a peephole that came with the peephole frame and it cut it out and stuck it to the door.

*Fun Fact: The peephole frame on the TV show was originally a mirror but one of the crew members accidentally broke it so they placed it over the peephole. Voila! A star is born.

What the heck is that thing under the frame? I had to google what it was. It’s a doorbell. I found some vintage door bells on EBay but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money (read: any money) on a door bell. What I ended up using was a lid to a candle holder that I found at Target. So Now I have a lovely scented candle and all I used to stick it to the door under the frame was a little bit of superglue.

The Doorknob

The doorknob was painted on, just like I did with these door knobs in my hallway a couple of years back. Side note* After I painted this on last week I actually found vintage style working doorknobs with the back-plate at Home Depot. I haven’t been able to find these before at a decent price. . It figures that I found it after I painted the gold back plate onto the door. If you can’t find or don’t want to buy the real thing the fake painted one is pretty cute too.

The Lock

The lock was totally unnecessary but I thought it was fun for authenticity’s sake. I didn’t actually screw it into the wall, I just used the command strips again. Because this is my craft room and I don’t need to lock it, it doesn’t have to be secure.

I considered adding an intercom onto the wall as well but I thought that may be overkill. I might be kinda crazy but I’m not that crazy.

Anywho, what do you think of my funny little Friends door?
