Magic Marker Forest: Project Completed

January 9, 2012

Remember the wall mural I was working on that I showed you a few months back? I had been working on transforming my hallway into a magical forest, using only Sharpie markers. Well it’s finally complete and I’m so excited to show you the finished results
.

Here we go…

The original inspiration can be found from this post from Katie’s Pencil Box that I stumbled upon through Apartment Therapy. Here are some close up shots of the details.

I probably used about a dozen Sharpie pens. My walls are textured which I think made drawing the trees easier. I drew them freehand and each tree took about 45 minutes.

I was originally going to replace the ugly gold doorknobs but when I realized how expensive doorknobs can be I ended up just spray painting them black.

Before:

After:

I like those old Alice in Wonderland type doorknob plates but unfortunately those are pretty expensive too. I drew a stencil and used a sharpie again to draw the frame and keyhole around the knob.

The original light fixture was an old ugly white glass globe. I thought a bright chandelier would look much better. I found this white chandelier that I decided to paint:

After

I used a bottle of craft paint for the dollar store and took off the ugly foam glitter flowers and added some glass cabs instead. They were also from the dollar store.

The whole thing took several months. I had no idea it would be so much work when I started but I am really pleased with the results.
How do you think it turned out?

My name is Elena Sullivan and I am currently curating a collection of Sharpie projects for Looksisquare(dot)com. I don't know if you're familiar with Looksi but it's a lot like CraftGawker: they display a thumbnail image from your blog along with a short description and a link. Typically you would submit your own images (like you do on CraftGawker) but they also have curators (like myself) who do theme-based round ups. I'd like to include your Sharpie'd walls if you're okay with that. The collection goes up on Friday (8/2). If you would prefer that I don't include them please let me know.
    Thanks!!
    Elena
