Carpet is such a great option when it comes to the flooring in your home. It feels absolutely wonderful under foot, and it can really make your home feel warm and welcoming.
That being said, carpet is a lot harder to clean than other types of flooring.
One of the benefits of choosing hardwood or laminate flooring is that you can easily clean up any spillages or stains that occur to the carpet.
Unfortunately, when it comes to carpet, these stains are often a lot harder to clean up. Especially if you have light-colored carpet, and the stain is dark.
If you have young children or animals, one of the stains that you will need to be prepared to deal with is poop.
Accidents happen, and it is not uncommon for both toddlers and dogs, or even cats, to poop on your floor by mistake. If this happens, then you will want to know how to get poop out of carpet.
In this guide, I’ll be telling you how to do this. So if you want to find out more, keep on reading!
Can You Get Poop Stains Out Of Carpet?
As I have just established, getting poop on your carpet is a lot more common than you might expect. Even if your dog is particularly well-trained, they might have an accident if they have a bad tummy, and this could cause them to poop on the carpet.
The same thing could occur if your cat is feeling unwell, or any other domestic pet who has free run of your house for that matter.
It is also surprisingly common for you to get baby or toddler poop on your carpet. Any parent is familiar with the explosive diarrhea that babies can get from time to time, and if this happens at an unfortunate time, it could get on your carpet.
Likewise, toddlers who are in the process of potty training are a law unto themselves, and this could result in poop getting on your carpet.
Thankfully, most of the time, you will be able to get poop stains out of your carpet, no matter where the poop comes from.
If your carpet is a light color, then getting the stain out can be a little trickier. But with the right tools and methods, you should still be able to remove the stain from your carpet. So, let’s take a look at how to do it.
How To Get Dog Poop Out Of Carpet
When it comes to poop stains in your carpet, then the chances are that the stains have occurred because one of your pets have had an accident.
No matter whether it is cat poop or dog poop, the method is the same. So follow these steps to get animal poop out of your carpet.
The quicker you act, the easier it will be to remove the stain, so time really is of the essence. Always ensure that you are wearing gloves when cleaning up poop to protect yourself from bacteria.
If the poop is solid, then you should begin by picking up the poop using a poop bag. If the poop is not solid, then you should begin by covering the diarrhea with a bowl and allow it to dry.
Once the diarrhea has dried, then you should remove as much of the solid bits as possible using a paper towel. Ensure that you are not pushing the poop into the carpet in the process.
After you have removed as much as you can with the paper towel, take an old fork to gently scrape up as much of the leftover poop as possible. Then get out your vacuum and vacuum the area thoroughly.
The next thing that you are going to need to do is mix up a solution of water and vinegar.
Add a small amount of the mixture to a paper towel and then dab the area where the stain has occurred.
Blot dry with a dry paper towel once you are done. If the initial poop was solid, instead of using a vinegar/water solution, we would instead recommend spraying your regular cleaning solution onto the stain. Once done, blot dry with a paper towel.
After the carpet has dried, you should take baking soda and sprinkle it over the stain. This will help remove the smell.
If the poop was solid, then you will only need to leave the baking soda down for around 10 minutes. If the poop was runny, then we would recommend leaving the baking soda overnight.
To clean up the baking soda, simply run your vacuum cleaner over the area. If the poop was solid, then your job is done!
But if the poop was runny, we would recommend finishing off the process with a disinfectant spray. Once the spray dries, the stain should be gone!
How To Get Baby/Toddler Poop Out Of Carpet
Thankfully, if the poop that is on your carpet has come from a baby or a toddler, rather than an animal, then the process is exactly the same when it comes to cleaning!
For the best results, we would recommend following the steps for cleaning diarrhea out of your carpet.
A vinegar and water solution can work absolute wonders no matter where the feces has come from, and it will get your carpet looking as good as new.
The most important thing to remember when cleaning any poop out of your carpet is not to use bleach, or any products that contain bleach.
These products will not remove the stain, they will instead make the stain worse. That is why we would always recommend vinegar and water as the ideal poop cleaning solution.
