The view from my porch used to be gorgeous. We have cedar hedge at the edge of our property that gives us privacy from our neighbors yard and a busy street.
Over the past two years the hedge has slowly been dying and turning brown. The trees are on my neighbors side of the fence on their land so I can’t cut them down and to be honest I don’t want to because then I will lose the privacy between our backyards. No offense to them, but I don’t want to see them playing in their backyard and I’m sure they don’t want to see us either.

Instructions
Time needed: 2 hours
- Inspect the tree
Before you begin, inspect the dead tree to make sure that it is suitable for painting. If it is severely damaged, unstable or infested with bugs you might be better off cutting it down. Consult and arborist if you are unsure.
- Check the weather
Choose a day when it is not extremely hot or cold. You want mild weather conditions for best painting results. I waited until after dinner when the area was in full shade and when there was no rain in the forecast for several days.
- Prep the working area
Lawn paint is easy to clean off non-porous surfaces, but it's better to be cautious. Lay down plastic drop cloths or tarps around the tree's base to protect the surrounding vegetation and hardscape from accidental overspray. I didn’t need to do this because I wasn’t concerned with overspray in the area where I was working. If you are working near lawn furniture, your home’s exterior or a nice fence you should put up a drop cloth.
- Protect yourself
Wear gloves, old clothing and protective goggles while you work. You may also need a mask or respirator. There were not weird smells or fumes but if you are someone who is sensitive to particles in the air or have a health condition you may want to.
- Mix and apply paint
Add paint and water to the sprayer. Try the different nozzles until you find one you like best for the space you are spraying. Use smooth, even strokes to achieve coverage over the brown, dead trees.
- Apply a second coat
You may need to do a second coat to achieve maximum coverage. Wait an hour between coats.
- Allow paint to dry
Paint should be fully dry in about 24 hours. Results will last several months.
- Clean sprayer throughly and clean up
Clean the spray nozzle or paint sprayer thoroughly after use. Run plain water through the sprayer until it runs clear. Remove the plastic drop cloths or tarps carefully, avoiding contact with any wet paint.
I am absolutely thrilled with the results using the sprayers green paint. I am able to avoid replacing the privacy hedge and keep a nice looking view from my back porch. Looks great! But I'm confused. It says it is water resistant and won't rub off. It also says it only lasts about 3 months based on how much rain, etc. you get.

The packaging says 3 months but I’ve had mine on my trees for way longer than 3 months through rain etc and it still looks as good as when I first applied it. I can see myself applying this once per year.
