Chunky Crochet Hat Tutorial

Chunky Crochet Hat Tutorial

It’s February and as much as I wish it was warm, sunny April or May, unfortunately we still have a ways to go. If I have to suffer the cold February wind and weather I might as well look stylish doing it.

For this hat I used a soft, chunky yarn from Lion Brand and a 6.5 mm crochet hook. The stitches you will need to know are chain, slip stitch, half double crochet and double crochet.

It took me just over an hour to complete this hat. I've been enjoying working with thicker yarns lately. You can make a large project in less time than if your were using a skinnier yarn, plus it’s so soft and cozy. I have been wearing this hat 24-7, even to bed since I am probably the coldest person on the planet.

Supplies:

  • Lion Brand soft and chunky yarn
  • 6.5 mm crochet hook.

Directions

Begin by chaining two.

Half double crochet into the first stitch 10 times. Join to the first stitch with a slip stitch, chain two.

Double crochet twice into each stitch for a total of 20 stitches, join with the first stitch with a slip stitch. Chain two.

Double crochet twice into each stitch for a total of 40 stitches. Join with the first stitch with a slip stitch. Chain two.

Double crochet once into each stitch for a total of 40 stitches. Join with the first stitch with a slip stitch, Chain two.

Repeat two more times.

For the next 4 rows, instead of doing double crochet, do half double crochet. Then do a single crochet stitch around the edge to finish it off.

Optional: Make a pom pom for the top.

Wrap a piece of the yarn around a toilet paper roll and tie another piece of yarn around the center. Cut the loops of the yarn and trim it. Then, tie it to the top of the hat with a double knot.

Weave in the ends.
