Why I Shaved My Head
No, I didn’t have a mental break down like Britney Spears in 2007 and no I am not ill (thank goodness). I also didn’t have lice or experience any horrible DIY hair disasters.
The reason I shaved off my hair is because I was recently cast as a background actor in the CW show The Flash, based on the DC superhero comic.
For those of you unfamiliar with background actors, they are also referred to as “extras”. When you watch a movie or TV show and see people behind the main actors sitting at a coffee shop or strolling through a park, those people are actors who have been cast to play their role. The extras are supposed to blend in and not be noticed. They are just there to help set the scene and make the show look more authentic.
I live in Washington State just south of the Canadian border. I was born in Canada and visit my family back home in BC often. Vancouver BC has a huge TV and Film industry. Many, many shows and movies are filmed there.
Since my dad retired a couple of years ago he has been doing background acting as a fun part-time gig. He forwarded me an email as a joke last month. The casting people on the Flash were looking for people willing to shave their heads to play prisoners in a concentration camp scene.
Well, I decided to submit an application because it looked like a fun thing to do. I know you all probably think I’m crazy for shaving my head but as far as I’m concerned it’s only hair and this seemed like a fun experience. I’ve been on set a few times as a background actor many years ago. I did episodes of The L Word, Stargate SG-1 and I was in the movie Martian Child.
I sent in my application and they emailed me back a few minutes later saying they wanted to hire me and that I would have to go to Vancouver in two days to get my “haircut”.
The drive to Vancouver from my house is just over an hour. I didn’t really understand why I had to drive all the way to the film studio to get my head shaved when I could easily do it at home but they paid me for two hours of work to get my “haircut” so I didn’t complain.
I was SO nervous to shave my head. I’ve never shaved it before and I was really doubting whether or not I wanted to be bald and have short hair for about a year. My husband convinced me to do it because he wanted me to have the experience of being in the TV show.
I can’t really talk about my time on set because I signed some confidentiality waivers saying I wouldn’t reveal any secrets about the show but I will be on Season 4 Episode 8 of The Flash in the background of the prison scenes. We also shot a scene for the Arrow which is another CW superhero show. The 8th episode of every season of these shows is always a crossover episode with the other CW superhero shows. This year happens to be the largest TV crossover event of all time with The Flash, Supergirl, The Arrow and DC Legends of Tomorrow sharing a story line.
The scenes we shot were at night, outside for two days and it was very cold. The good part was that they placed me right by all the main actors so there is a very good chance you will see me on screen (and I will admit that I tried very hard to get in the shots).
No, I didn’t get any photos with the actors. Talking to the actors is forbidden and will get you kicked off set. One of the female characters did make some small talk with me about how it was really cold out, so that was kind of cool.
It’s been a month since I shaved my head and I don’t mind it. Showers take about two seconds and I don’t have to worry about doing my hair. Most of the time I wear a hat because my head feels cold. I don’t regret shaving my but I don’t think I will ever do it again. It is going to take SO long to grow back. I’ve been dyeing my hair every color of the rainbow since I was about 12 or 13 years old so it will be nice to have my normal virgin hair grow back. I’m not planning on dyeing it so it I’m sure it will feel so good to have healthy hair for once!
What do you think of my shaved ‘do? Would you ever shave your head?
