Last week I took a private class with a local florist, Natalie of Pozie by Natalie. I learned how to make flower rings and crowns and succulent rings. The projects that we worked on turned out beautifully, and I will be sharing some tutorials in the coming weeks. Today I am going to show you how to make a simple straw flower ring.

Strawflower Ring

Have you heard of Strawflowers? They are in the daisy family and they look like the flower child of a daisy and a chrysanthemum. They are native to Australia and naturally have a dry, papery feel to them. They are ideal for crafts and projects because they dry well and last forever. I have seen these flower many times in dried flower arrangements and I always thought they were fresh flower that were preserved a special way but I discovered they actually grow dry.

Before my flower workshop I had never heard of Strawflowers, but, apparently they are easy to grow from seed. Needless to say I will be growing a large crop of these next year.

To make a Strawflower ring you will need the following:

Supplies

  • Dried Strawflowers
  • Floral adhesive
  • Ring base

Simply cut the stem off the flower and apply some floral adhesive. Plop it on to the ring base and hold for 30 seconds. Let it dry and you have a stunning Strawflower ring.

Pretty cool, huh?

This is the flower crown and the succulent ring that I made in the class. They are make from 100% real flowers. The cool thing about the succulent ring is that you can actually take the succulent off the ring base when you are done wearing it, plant it in some soil and it will continue to grow! So cool. I will have tutorials for these two projects in the coming weeks.
