Kitchen Cleaning Hacks
Have you noticed that cold and flu season has arrived? Now that my daughter is in school full time and my husband is working outdoors all winter long I’m planning ahead for cold and flu season to making sure we have everything our family needs to stay healthy.
Last year cold and flu season hit our house hard. Miraculously I was the only one in the family who didn’t get sick, but my husband and daughter both got a nasty bug. Taking care of everyone in the family who is sick leaves little time to do much else and the rest of the housework can get cast by the wayside. I’m all about multitasking and like to use my time as effectively as possible. Today I’m sharing kitchen cleaning hacks that can be completed in 45 seconds or less. That’s about as long as it takes to brew up a cup of tea for your loved ones who are feeling under the weather.
I hate making rushed trips to the grocery store to pick up supplies like medication or tissues when someone isn’t feeling well. I like to stock up before family members start showing symptoms. It’s so much easier to be prepared ahead of time than to scramble after everyone is already sick, and who wants to venture out of the house when they are the one who isn’t feeling well?
I recently headed to Fred Meyer recently to pick up groceries and some things my family might need once the cold and flu viruses hit our home.
I purchased Kleenex® Germ Removal Wet Wipes. These safely wipe away 99% of germs from skin with no harsh chemicals. They are great to stash in your purse when you’re on the go. They are strong enough for your hands but still feel soft on your face and body.

Quick Kitchen Cleaning Tips you can do in 45 seconds or less
Empty the dishwasher: If you put everything away quickly you should be able to empty the dishwasher in less than a minute. Putting the dishes away is a task that I always get lazy about. It’s good to just hurry up and get it out of the way because you actually have somewhere to put the dirty dishes instead of letting them pile up on the counter or in the sink. Doing small tasks more often will help prevent you from having to do a big job later on.
Clean the microwave: An easy way to clean the microwave is to fill a bowl with water and microwave it for 45 seconds. The heat will create steam which will loosen any food stuck to the inside of the microwave, making it really easy to wipe down.
Sweep the floor: This one is pretty self-explanatory but if you have pets as I do then your floors probably need to be swept or vacuumed every day. You might not have time to do the whole house but sweeping just one room can make a difference.
Take out the trash: I don’t notice how bad the trash smells until after I take it out and realize the whole house smells better. Take out the trash every day to help keep your house smelling fresh. If the can takes several days to fill consider buying a smaller one and emptying it more often. Food waste and other garbage sitting in the trash can will attract bugs and stink the place up real quick.
Toss linens in the washer: Do you have curtains in your kitchen? Why not take them down and start a load of laundry. While you’re at it, throw in the rest of the kitchen linens like tea towels and washcloths. If you have a fabric floor mat you can include that too.
Clean the garbage disposal: Garbage disposals can get pretty yucky. Freeze lemon juice into ice cube trays and then drop them into the disposal and turn it on. Sprinkle some baking soda down there too and then flush the whole thing with water.
Clean out the fridge: You don’t have to do a huge fridge overhaul but chances are there are some questionable foods hiding out in there that are past their best before date. Take 45 seconds and peek inside the fridge and toss out anything that doesn’t look safe to eat.
