How You Can Help Veterans This Holiday Season

December 8, 2020

This post was sponsored by DAV. All opinions are my own.

This is my husband, Rob, when he was in the Navy

As we enter the holiday season, many of us are looking for ways to help give back and support other members of our community. This year in particular so many of our fellow humans are struggling, and anything we can do to help those in need will go a long way.

One cause that is near to my heart is DAV (Disabled American Veterans). DAV is a non-profit organization with more than 1 million members. It was founded in 1920 and chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1932. My husband as well as my father in law are both veterans. My husband was in the Navy before I met him many years ago and my father in law was in the army and fought in Vietnam.

What is the DAV?

The DAV empowers veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. It is dedicated to a single purpose: keeping our promise to America’s veterans. DAV does this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of America’s injured heroes on Capitol Hill; providing employment resources to veterans and their families and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.

The Importance of Giving Back

Our family has been trying to find ways to help others and make sure my daughter understands the importance of giving back and how much privilege she has. Some of the things we are doing this holiday season are: making donations to the food bank, buying Christmas presents to a family in need and making holiday cards to send to troops overseas.

DAV Spare Change Program

The easiest thing we’ve done so far is donate our spare change to the DAV Spare Change program. This event has just kicked off and will run into the new year. The DAV Spare Change program allows donors to round up purchases on a credit or debit card on a monthly basis to automatically donate “spare change” to give holiday hope and a brighter 2021 to disabled veterans.

For example, if I head to the drive through coffee stand and buy a latte that costs $3.85, the charge will automatically be rounded up to $4.00 and the 15 cent difference will go to the DAV! It’s literally the easiest way to donate to charity.

“During their service, most members of our U.S. military missed holidays with family and friends and many now live with the injuries and illnesses as a result of that service,” said Marc Burgess, national adjutant and CEO of DAV. “They made many sacrifices to defend what we hold sacred. We’re thankful to those Americans who will generously make a small sacrifice of spare change to say thank you and happy holidays.”

How to sign up for the DAV Spare Change program

Anyone can participate! Just three easy steps:

  1. ENROLL. Enroll in the program online. Link a credit or debit card you use for daily purchases.
  2. SHOP. Use your card for holiday or everyday purchases, online shopping for the most wanted toys for your kids or grandkids, or a new wreath for the front door. In other words, spend like you normally would.
  3. Every purchase made on your card will automatically round up to the nearest dollar and your spare change is donated directly to DAV to give hope to veterans!

What are some ways that you are giving back this holiday season? Let me know in the comments and make sure you check out the DAV Spare Change Program today.

Hi, I'm Adrienne. My mission is to help women to tap into their creativity and gain the confidence they need to tackle DIY projects around the home. I want women to realize they don't have to "wait for hubby" to do renovation projects around the home. They can teach themselves how to use power tools and create a home of their dreams on a budget.
