Flower Confetti

My husband and I just celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. We have been together for just about a decade at this point. It feels like such a long time, yet time seems to have flown by. I love to look at photos of other people’s weddings and check out the current trends on Pinterest. There are so many fun ideas I wish I had thought of for our wedding. I also kind of wish I could plan another wedding but without all the costs!

Wedding trends (like all trends) change over the years. Back in the day people used to throw rice at weddings when the bride and groom were leaving the church. The tradition began in ancient Rome. Wedding guests would throw rice at the bride and groom to wish them good luck and fertility in their marriage.

At some point in history a myth was started that uncooked rice thrown at weddings was harmful to birds and would kill them. According to Snopes, this myth is actually untrue. Nevertheless people started throwing birdseed, sunflower seeds and blowing bubbles at weddings instead of rice.

At my wedding instead of rice we had our guests blow bubbles. It was very lovely and looked really nice in our photos.

For today’s tutorial I am going to show you how to make dried flower confetti. It’s a biodegradeable, organic, earth friendly option for throwing at weddings. Not that rice, seeds or bubbles aren’t all those things, but flower petals are  another option and I think they look pretty.

You can buy dried flowers or you can DIY.

If you want to buy dried petal confetti, here are some options. If you opt to DIY it’s very simple as long as you have access to some fresh flowers. Rose petals work great and dry nicely. If you have some roses growing in your garden you can simply let them wilt and pick them off the stem,

The other flowers in my confetti mix are strawflowers pulled apart and several colors of Statice.  You can also press flowers or leaves between the pages of books to flatten them and then add them to the mix.

Store the confetti in small nylon bags from the crafts store for your wedding guests.
