If you’re running a small business, then you may not have a large budget. This is why you want to make the most of the money you have. Energy is a major expenditure for any small business. So, how can you reduce the electricity costs for your business so that they do not place too much pressure on your budget?
It may be worthwhile thinking about changing your business electricity supplier. You do not have to stay with the same provider if you can get a better deal elsewhere. In the meantime, I have put together a list of things you can do to reduce electricity costs no matter which provider you are with.
The price of monitors
If you are able to, it’s a good idea to use laptops in your business. They use less power than desktop computers. If you do use monitors in your business, it’s important to ensure that they are switched off at night so that no electricity is wasted.
Taking care of heating and air conditioning
If you are running a business every day it can be easy to forget about things such as the air conditioning and heating systems in your premises. They seem to work okay, so that is all that matters, right? This is not always the case. If you do not ensure that these systems are checked and serviced regularly they may not be running efficiently. This can lead to significant electricity wastage.
Using natural light where possible
Obviously, the more lights you have switched on, the more electricity you use. This is why it’s a good idea to make use of natural light if you can. Of course, if you open the blinds on windows you need to be aware of potential health and safety risks, such as screen glare.
Using timers for air conditioning and lights
If you want to make sure that the lights and are conditioning are switched off when no-one is in the building, you may want to invest in a timer system. Leaving the switching off in the hands of the last person to leave may result in lights or air conditioning being left on in error. This can cost you money.
Using motion sensors
Even when your business premises are occupied, there may be some rooms that are not in use all the time, such as store rooms. It’s easy for people to use these rooms and forget to switch the light of when they leave. You may want to think about using motion sensors to make sure that lights are turned off if there is no motion detected in a room for several minutes.
All of these tips can be used to help you reduce the cost of electricity in your business. Some of them are very simple and have no associated cost. It’s also well worth seeing if you can get your electricity supply cheaper elsewhere.
