4 Ways to Create a Relaxing Shower Ritual

Like most moms with small children, I cherish my alone time (the very small amount of it that I get). I enjoy drinking a cup of coffee in the morning by myself, long walks down the aisles of Walmart alone and basking in the glow of my cellphone as I scroll through my Instagram feed before bed. I also enjoy the 10 minutes per day of alone time I get in the evening to shower. Because my shower time is so short and sweet, I have to make the most of it. My relaxing shower ritual is something I look forward to every night.
A nice hot shower shower can help you de-stress and promote better sleep. So, lock the bathroom door, dim the lights, put on some relaxing music and come wash the stress of the day down the drain with me.
Wait, what? That came out wrong. Get out of my bathroom, creep!
Here are four of my best tips to help you create a relaxing shower ritual.
I like to hang a little sprig of eucalyptus from my shower head. It helps make the whole bathroom smell great and feel like a eucalyptus steam room once the hot water gets going. The scent from the branches wafts into my bedroom and since my side of the bed is near the master bathroom, I get the nice smell of eucalyptus when I’m trying to fall asleep and when I wake up in the morning. Most grocery stores have eucalyptus branches for sale in the floral department for just a few dollars. I got mine from my local florist for $1. If for some reason you can’t find the branches you can also use essential oils. Just add a few drops to your soap or body wash.
Use a Loofah
A loofah is a great way to exfoliate. Especially if it is attached to a long handle so you can scrub those hard to reach places. Keep it in the shower and add a little soap or body wash to the sponge. It feels good and gets off all the dry skin so your skin is prepped for moisturizer.
Fun fact: Did you know that a loofah is actually a plant? It’s true! It’s eaten as a vegetable in China and Vietnam but the plant can also be allowed to mature used as a bath or kitchen sponge after being processed to remove everything but the network of xylem fibers. If the loofah is allowed to fully ripen and then dry out on the vine, the flesh disappears leaving only the fibrous skeleton and seeds, which can be easily shaken out
Wet Skin Moisturizer
My skin type is normal to oily for most of the year but in the winter months my skin gets dry, itchy and flaky. Daily moisturizing is a must but considering that I barely have enough time to shower, spending time in the bathroom moisturizing everyday isn’t going to happen That’s why I love Jergens® Wet Skin™ Moisturizer with Cherry Almond Essence. I recently picked some up on one of my long, relaxing strolls alone through Walmart. It literally takes 30 seconds while you are still in the shower to apply it. After your shower, while you are still in the stall but the water has been turned off, you can quickly apply the moisturizer. Take a small dollop and smooth it onto your skin while you are still wet and then hop out of the shower and dry as normal. It comes in a variety of scents, but the Cherry Almond, which is exclusive to Walmart is my favorite. I also purchased and love the Nourishing Monoi Oil variety.
Splurge on New Towels
If you have been using the same towels for a long time it may be time to invest in some new ones. If you use the same towel to dry your body that you also use to dry your dog after her outside walk then it’s definitely time to get some new towels. I prefer cotton terry cloth towels. They absorb water quickly and feel so soft and lovely. But don’t buy white towels! I learned this the hard way. White shows every bit of makeup, mud or yucky stuff that you get on it. My advice for everything that you might normally be inclined to buy white is to actually purchase brown because it will hide any kind of dirt or stain!
