Happy Friday Gnomies!
Today I am sharing a super simple tutorial for making pillow covers. Changing up your throw pillows is an easy way to spruce up your decor without spending a lot of money. If you make your own diy pillow covers you will save even more money! You can change up your pillows and other home accessories at the change of each season to keep your home decor looking fresh. I wrote a post previously showing you how to make a no-sew pillow cover. For today’s project you will need a sewing machine. Don’t worry if you are a novice sewer, this is a great beginner project.
When I was little my mom taught my sister and I how to sew. It wasn’t until earlier this year that I started sewing again. I had bought a sewing machine from Costco a couple of years ago but never learned how to use it, so it sat in it’s box in the corner of my craft room, sad and lonely. I took a few sewing lessons earlier this year and now I’ve got lots of fun and simple beginner projects I am working on. Today’s pillow case tutorial couldn’t be easier.
- Pillow form. I used old pillows that I already had and bought two more from the thrift shop for $2 each. This is much cheaper than buying pillow forms from the craft store
- Fabric- 2 yards was enough to make three 16″x16″ pillow covers
- Matching thread
Before you begin remember to wash and dry your fabric. If you don’t, and you wash and dry your pillow case later it could shrink and become misshaped. After your fabric is laundered iron out all the wrinkles before you get started.
For a 16” Pillow you will need to cut your fabric 38” long and 17” high.
For a different size pillow simply measure the pillow insert and double the measurement. Add 6” for overlap and hem. Add a ½” to the top and bottom for seam allowance.
Create a hem on your pillow by folding the edge over 1/2 inch and ironing it down. Then sew around the perimeter.
Fold your fabric like I did above with the edges overlapping approximately 3 inches. Pin down the open sides and then sew straight across.
Flip your pillow cover inside out and insert your form. Tada! You have made your very own pillow cover!
PS: Do you like the other cow print cushion and the grey blanket? They were provided to me by my friends over at Jerome’s Furniture and I will be sharing more photos of my living room and the other accents Jerome’s provided me next week!
